Gold prices today for the week ending on March 6, 2009 were a mixed bag. As you can see on the gold price chart below, the price of gold began the week at $939.47 per troy oz of gold. On Monday the price of gold rallied to almost$960 until falling below $910 an ounce of gold. By the end of the week, gold prices rebounded to where the price of gold was at the beginning of the week, $939 per troy oz.

Gold Price Chart 3-6-09

Zinc Prices, Silver Prices and Copper Prices

Like the price of gold all metals rebounded by the end of the week. The price of oil was up $2 and the price of zinc, copper and silver all rallied by the end of the week. While the price of gold rallied on Friday, there was not much volume in gold trading.

Platinum Prices Today

One of the more surprising metals this week was platinum. The price of platinum rose about $1000 and in fact almost reached $1,100. Many have predicted that the price of platinum would remain low because its demand is low right now in the auto industry. However, the platinum market is much smaller than the gold market. But, the price of platinum has a long way to go before reaching its high of $2,273 per ounce of platinum in March 2008.

That is it for the Gold Prices Today weekly gold report. Next week we will provide another review of the week’s gold prices.

Double Gold Eagle coins are some of the most sought after gold coins produced by the United States Mint. When investing in gold, many gold investors overlook Double Gold Eagles. Instead, they focus on modern American Gold Eagle bullion coins or other modern bullion coins produced by mints around the world. However, with gold prices today being at 12 month highs, one of the best ways to buy gold is to buy rare double gold eagle coins.

Double Gold Eagle

Rare double gold eagle coins offer two types of investment potential. The first is based off of the value of gold bullion. The second is numismatic value. Gold Double Eagle coins can be scarce in certain conditions. By looking to buy Mint State Double Eagle gold coins, you have the luxory of knowing that the value of double eagle gold coins will never drop below the value of gold, but you get the extra luxory of owning an asset that might appreciate in value based on collector demand.

I really like Mint State Double Gold Eagle coins in the MS-61, MS-62 and MS-63 range. These gold coins often trade at gold spot prices but if you hold them for the long term, demand for these coins could push the price of these Mint State coins much higher than the gold spot prices. That is the beauty of these double gold eagle coins.

One thing for you to be aware of though is that many of these double gold eagle coins were produced in large numbers. Therefore, you must be careful about the premium over gold prices today that you pay for these coins. If you buy at a price a lot higher than the gold spot price, you might never recoup you initial investment.

Do you own Double Gold Eagle coins? If so, leave a comment below.

How To Buy Gold Bullion Overview

With gold prices today at or above $1,000 per ounce, investors are trying to figure out the most cost effective way to buy gold bullion. Buying gold bullion is not as easy as buying shares of stock. However, through the use of gold ETF funds, learning how to buy gold bullion has become easier.

But gold ETF funds are not the only way to buy gold bullion. Gold bullion can be purchased in many different forms. If a gold investor is looking to purchase physical gold to hold and store, he can purchase gold bullion bars, scrap gold, gold bullion coins, or rare gold coins with numismatic value.

How To Buy Gold Bullion Coins

Mints around the world sell gold bullion coins for investors and collectors. Some of the most desired gold bullion coins are the American Eagle Gold Coins sold by the United States Mint. However, some other popular gold bullion coins are Gold China Panda Coins, Royal Mint Sovereign Gold Coins and South African Krugerrand Gold Coins.

There are four main drawbacks to buying and selling gold bullion coins. The first is the acquisition cost. Gold dealers will not sell you gold coins at the gold spot price. Instead, the Mint charges a premium to cover its overhead and profit and the dealer that you purchase from charges a premium to cover its overhead and profit. If you are buying online or through the mail, there will also be transportation fees. In addition to the acquisition costs, buying gold bullion coins includes a storage cost, insurance cost and sale transaction fee often in the form of a sale price below the current gold spot price when you go to sell the gold coins.

A best practice for how to buy gold bullion coins is to find a local gold bullion coin dealer to buy from. If you buy regularly or in bulk, you can often get lower prices from a local gold bullion coin dealer. This is especially true if you tell the dealer that you want to buy XX ounces ahead of time. The coin dealer can acquire the gold bullion coins and sell them to you right away knowing he has a client. I think that this is the best way to buy gold bullion coins. But, it is not the most cost efficient way.

How To Buy Gold Bullion Through Gold ETF Funds

Buying gold bullion using gold ETF funds is the most cost efficient way to purchase gold bullion. The purchase commission and sale commission on gold ETF funds transactions is often much lower than the premium you pay when buying gold coins. If you would like to read more about investing in gold using gold ETF funds, I encourage you to read my primer on Gold ETF Funds. While you are at it, you might want to also read our popular article on understanding gold market prices.

I believe that buying gold ETF funds is the most cost efficient way to invest in the gold market. However, many investors want to own physical gold. The reason being that ETF funds are still more subject to government regulations. But at the end of the day you can’t actually turn in your shares in the gold ETF fund for the physical gold in the vault.

Therefore, if you want to buy physical gold bullion, I recommend buying gold bars and gold coins. If you have any additional questions for how to buy gold bullion, please ask them in the comments below.
